The Texas Wildlife Association separates itself from other conservation organizations by focusing it’s mission on private landowners and their ethical relationship to the land. Command-and-control environmentalism has largely run its course, and land trusts (such as the Trust for Public Land, et. al.) will never raise enough money to do the job alone. The future well-being of wildlife, both game and rare species, depends upon private landowners’ commitment to habitat. Private landowners aren’t the “gaps” between “protected” lands; they are the real stewards of the lands in their care, and often have so proven for several generations. Motivated by what Aldo Leopold called a land ethic, enabled by sustainable markets and incentives, and nurtured by their association with the entire land community…private landowners are achieving real conservation results, in some cases overcoming great political odds to do so.
