Mycosphaerella is a
large genus whose species vary in the type of conidial state produced.
Some produce cercosporoid conidia, while other
Mycosphaerella species have Cladosporium and Septoria conidial
states. Mycosphaerella and its anamorphs: 1. Names published in
Cercospora and Passalora is the first product of a larger effort to
recollect, culture, and sequence all Mycosphaerella species. For that
reason this is not just a compilation of names based on literature searches,
this book is the result of several years of studying type specimens with the
thousands of Cercospora names which increases our knowledge of the taxa
as a whole.
Braun and Crous have provided a guide to the taxonomy of over 3,000 names
described in Cercospora. More than 650 remain in Cercospora and
281 are considered synonyms of Cercospora apii. More than 550 names of
Passalora, including Mycovellosiella, Phaeoramularia,
Tandonella and Phaeoisariopsis p.p., are treated in a second list for
a total of 5,720 names being treated. For each accepted species, which are
listed alphabetically, the authors indicate the current nomenclatural
disposition, synonyms, and pertinent literature. Much of the host and
geographical data were taken from herbarium specimens and therefore not
published previously, or were in widely scattered literature, making this
information especially useful.
