Description: This immunostimulant is a preparation consisting of 0.4 mg/mL non-viable Propionibacterium acnes suspended in 12.5% ethanol in saline. Actions: P. acnes has been observed to induce macrophage activation and lymphokine production, enhance cell mediated immunity, and increase natural killer cell activity. Indications: The immunostimulant is indicated in dogs as an adjunct to antibiotic therapy in the treatment of chronic recurring canine pyoderma to decrease the severity and extent of lesions and increase the percentage of dogs free of lesions after the appropriate therapeutic period. Culture and sensitivity tests are recommended to determine the appropriate antibiotic. Contraindications: The therapeutic effect of the immunostimulant may be compromised if used in conjunction with glucocorticoids or other suppressors. Steroid therapy should be withdrawn at least seven days before initiating this immunostimulant therapy.
